It’s All About Targeting the Right Market
Marketing a business is an ongoing process but the beginning stages can be a bit of a gamble. When you are first starting out putting up money for anything is a scary thought. After all you don’t know that what you pay for is going to produce good results, if any. Free methods are obviously free but remember time is money too.
Once money is spent it can’t be retrieved. And actually the same goes for time too. Once you spend time on something you can’t get your time back. That’s why it’s important to know what target market you are trying to reach.
In simple terms all that target market means is the ideal audience for the business owner. The ideal customer.
Not only is it pointless to market to the wrong target market but it’s also a huge waste of time and money. And today most people don’t have time or money to waste.
For example a business that sells plus-size clothing is more than likely not going to see any results if they market to a bunch of petite women. Sure those petite women need clothes just not plus-size clothes.
Now on the other hand if the business owner were to say write an article with a link back to their site where those petite women could find info on clothing for petites then it will probably bring an increase in traffic to their site.
You really need to determine your target market for best results though. One way you can do this is take a couple minutes, get quiet and in your head visualize exactly who needs or wants your service/product.
Get down to the nitty gritty during your visualization. Are they men? Are they women? Are they young? Are they baby boomers? How can you make their life easier? What benefits can you provide them?
Another way you can determine your target market is to do a little research. Search for complementary and competing products. Visit their site and while there think about who you think they are marketing to. Does that market you think they are reaching fit into what you visualized as your market?
It’s all about targeting the right market. Once you begin doing that you’ll see a better return on investment.
